West Hempstead is a bedroom community in the town of Hempstead. European settlers arrived in 1644 shortly after the English colonists and Indian tribes created a treaty. There are different stories as to the way in which this area received its name with the major belief being that farmers had to grow a cash crop and then hemp the next year and alternate yearly to help replenish the soil.
West Hempstead is a family community with just over half of all residents being married and owning their home. West Hempstead Union Free School serves the area with 3 elementary schools, 1 middle school, and 1 high school. West Hempstead offers a wide array of family fun activities as well as shopping, services, and businesses of all kinds. Fine dining as well as fast food dots the community. For those that enjoy joining organizations, Young Israel, Lions Club, Rotary Club, and the Kiwanis are active clubs.
